It's a Dirty World...Let's Clean it Up

10:00 AM–10:30 AM Sep 19, 2019 (US - Central)

STERIS Instrument Management Services (IMS) - Booth 143

Description

After this session you’ll be able to:

  1. List two pathogens in the operating room.
  2. Explain the Spalding Classification as it relates to disinfection for various types of reusable devices.
  3. Describe the best practices for intraoperative/procedural instrument care.

Why this is important:

Surgical site infections (SSIs) adversely affect patients and indicate that there are departmental processes that need to be reviewed. Every perioperative team member has an obligation and opportunity to reduce the instances and harm related to SSI. The primary means to protect surgical patients from harm is by effectively cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments. This process must then be validated by inspecting instruments for cleanliness and proper functioning before they are placed into service. This involves using a combination of evidence-based resources with proven outcomes such as protein testing and borescope inspection. During this educational program, Gabrielle Cox will discuss the most common pathogens attributed to surgical site infection and their contribution to biofilm formation. You’ll leave with best practices for cleaning and sterilizing instruments, including common inspection and verification procedures.
